Professor Jayashankar Biography: Kothapalli Jayashankar, popularly known as Professor Jayashankar, Who was born on 6 August 1934 and died, 21 June 2011 was an Indian scholar and social activist. He was a key ideologue of the Telangana movement. From 1952 he fought for his state. He often stated that unequal distribution of river water was the main cause of the Telangana independence movement. He was a former Vice-Chancellor of Kakatiya University and an activist in the independent Telangana movement.

Kothapalli Jayashankar was born in Akkampet village in Atmakur Mandal, Warangal, Hyderabad to Lakshmikanta Rao and Mahalakshmi of the Vishwakarma community. He attended school in Hanamkonda, Warangal, and obtained a Master’s in Economics from Banaras Hindu University, a Master’s in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University, a PhD in Economics from Osmania University, and a Bachelor’s in Economics from Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Professor Jayashankar Career
Jayashankar quit classes in 1952 as a secondary school student in protest against state reorganization. He also travelled by bus to take part in the 1952 Mulki Riots. In 1962, he took part in a campaign that shocked the region. As a student leader, he participated in the 1952 movement for an independent Telangana state.
He joined the revived agitation as a lecturer in 1968. He fought the fight for Telangana through research and academics and by educating people about the cause. He is known as the original ideologue of Telangana. He led several agitations since 1962 which turned into a mass movement after the 1969 agitation.
He was involved in the efforts of the Telangana movement to achieve statehood since 1952 starting with the Non Malki Go Back movement and the Idli Sambhar Go Back movement. He wanted the “puli muthurs” to be settled on Telangana land. In 1969, Jayashankar in consultation with Professor Rawada Sathyannaraya formed a strong team of about 10 members who would contribute to the Telangana struggle as intellectuals and no longer be silent bystanders. These included Professor Anand Rao Thota, Parmaji and Prof. Sreedra Swamy. Swamy was Jayashankar’s classmate and childhood friend. Both of them studied in Warangal and did their Masters together from Benaras Hindu University. Swamy was very active during the formation of Telangana State and was welcomed by the Honourable Chief Minister of Telangana, Sri KCR, who awarded him the ‘Uttama Vidya Veta’ during the first anniversary celebrations of Telangana in recognition of his achievements as a teacher in Telangana.
Later, Professor Jayashankar founded the Telangana Janasabha, banned by the Government of India. He wrote numerous articles and research papers in English and Telugu on various aspects of the Telangana issue.
Before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Kakatiya University in 1991, Professor Jayashankar was the Registrar of the then Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL).
He has taught economics and supervised doctoral level research.
He has conducted in-depth research on problems arising from unequal levels of regional development, with particular focus on A.P.
He has published numerous papers in the fields of economic development and educational economics.
