Doug Emhoff Biography: Doug Emhoff(born October 13, 1964) is an American lawyer and the “Second Gentleman” of the United States.He is married to the 49th Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. As the first husband of a Vice President, Mr. Emhoff is the first “Second Gentleman” in the history of the United States. He is also the first Jewish spouse of a United States President or Vice President.

Doug Emhoff Early Life

Doug Emhoff was born on October 13, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents Barbara (née Kanzer) and Michael Emhoff. His ancestors emigrated to the United States from Gorlice, Poland, around 1899 due to persecution. He has an older brother, Andy, and a younger sister, Jamie. He grew up in Matawan and Old Bridge Township, New Jersey, and attended Cedar Ridge High School from 1969 to 1981.[7] His family belonged to Temple Shalom, a Reform synagogue in Aberdeen Township, where Emhoff had his bar mitzvah in 1977. The following summer, 1978, Emhoff attended Camp Cedar Lake in Milford, Pennsylvania, where he was named “Most Athletic” player in his division at age 13. At age 17, he moved with his family to Southern California, where he graduated from Agoura High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in communications from California State University, Northridge in 1987 and his J.D. from California State University, Gould School of Law in 1990.

Doug Emhoff is an entertainment litigation lawyer who began his career in Pillsbury Winthrop’s litigation group. In the late 1990s, he moved to the luxury firm Belin Rawlings & Badal. In 2000, he started his own firm with Ben Whitwell, which was acquired by Venable LLP in 2006. His clients include Walmart and Merck, and he became managing director of Venables West Coast office.

Emhoff joined DLA Piper as a partner in 2017, working in the firm’s Washington, D.C., and California offices. Emhoff took a leave of absence from his law practice after his wife was announced as Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 US presidential election. Following the victory of the Biden-Harris ticket, the campaign announced that Emhoff would permanently leave DLA Piper before the inauguration to avoid any conflicts of interest.

In December 2020, Georgetown University Law Center announced that Emhoff would join the school’s faculty as a distinguished visitor and fellow at the school’s Institute for Technology Law and Policy.

Doug Emhoff was married to film producer Kirsten Mackin from 1992 to 2008.[41] They have two children, Cole and Elle. Emhoff and Mackin divorced amicably and have since called each other “friends,” although Emhoff admitted to having had an affair with one of his children’s teachers and that this affair contributed to the breakdown of his first marriage.

In 2013, Emhoff was set up on a blind date with then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris.[46][47] They became engaged in March 2014 and married on August 22, 2014, at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. Harris’ sister, Maya, officiated. As of August 2019, Emhoff and Harris had an estimated net worth of $5.8 million. At the start of Harris’ term, the couple temporarily stayed at Blair House, the presidential residence, while the Vice President’s residence, Observatory Circle, was being restored and renovated. They also own homes in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
